Unfortunately, it didn't automatically update the driver for the Intel 865G motherboard graphics hardware. Instead, it installed a "generic" Microsoft VGA set of drivers. My particular D530 SFF is a 2.8ghz hyperthreaded P4, but according to the HP "Drivers WEB site" (for XP), ALL versions of the HP D530 have the same graphics hardware; so, my exact sub-model shouldn't really matter.
I've tried to run HP's softpac "sp31335.exe" to load the version "6.14.10.4396 A" graphics drivers that ran on this PC, when XP was installed. The softpac terminates before doing anything with a message that says "OS NOT supported." Because the softpac graphic drivers are supposedly "XPDM" compliant, I suspect that they will probably work with Win-7 (even though they are NOT supported by HP and may have some minor issues). Anyway, I would like to set a "restore point" and give it a whirl. What have I got to loose, since there is NO data or programs installed on this PC (clean install). In the worst case, I would just have to reload Win-7.
82865g Graphics Controller Windows 7 Driver
My problem: I can't get at the version "6.14.10.4396 A" graphics drivers because of the softpac installer program (i.e. "sp31335.exe"). Is there any way that I can bypass the "OS NOT supported" message and get the graphics drivers to install anyway?
While doing research, however, I found a later version of the Intel driver and installed it. The Windows DirectX Diagnostic Utility reports NO errors and hardware acceleration has been turned on. Also, 96MB of memory is allocated to graphics. I've run for a solid week with full graphics performance at least equal to what was previously achieved in Windows XP. It sounds to me like Intel has tossed the ball back to HP (and the other OEMs), when it comes to the 865G family of graphics controllers. Maybe, you can read the above referenced page and tell me, if my interpretation is correct?
Sounds to me like Intel provided XPDM support for the 865G so that Windows Vista could be run on these machines. In fact (to quote Intel) "Intel has tested XPDM graphics drivers on Windows Vista only on the following integrated graphics controllers: Intel 82865 Graphics Controller, Intel 82915G/82910GL Express Chipset Family, and the Mobile Intel 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset Family." Perhaps this is why the HP D530 doesn't have any problems with Windows Vista (using the "written for XP" drivers). Seems like Windows 7 has either "fallen through the crack" or nobody wants the HP D530 PC to optimally run Windows 7.
This time, drill down to the folder: Intel 82865g Driver (Vista-Win7)\ialmnt5, and select the Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller (Microsoft Corporation - XDDM) device from the list and see if the driver installs that way.
I had an idea to find a graphics card instead of trying to make the onboard graphics any better and that web browsing was as good as it gets with this PC. Which is already quite someting with the 'unofficial' driver and Windows 7! Thanks to this driver this still pretty nice PC is not stuck with XP.

If it is the 82865G just install the native Intel video driver for windows 7 Opens a new window. But this should be supported out of the box by Win 7. The performance is going to not be great on this old hardware (circa 2003-2004). I haven't touched one of these systems in about 6 years. If I remember correctly this model had the exploding capacitor issue too.
I have the same problem as well. I am using Viewsonic VA2223wm monitor and trying to get the 865G graphics controller to go into 1920x1080 mode but without success. I have upgraded the 865G driver to v6.14.10.4396. But I still cannot see a resolution of 1920x1080. The operating system is Windows 2000.
Well, I fixed the problem -- sort of. When I hook up the monitor to my Linux laptop, it displays in the 1920x1080 resolution without any problems. When I hook up the monitor to my Dell Optiplex running Windows 2000, it can only display upto 1280x1024. I talked to the Dell technical support and they were essentially of no help. It seems that the Intel 865G graphics card is capable of displaying the higher resolution, but no one at Dell could tell me how to get to that point. I already have the latest driver loaded in the Windows OS.
I run my Dell Dimension 3000 with the Linux (Ubuntu 8.041.1 CD), and I was able to get my Viewsonic VA2323wm monitor to display 1920 x 1080 resolution. in fact with the Linux installed in my Dell Dimension 3000 with the Intel integrated Extreme graphics 2 I was able to set to all the following monitor resolutions: 1920 x 1080; 1600 x 1200; 1680 x 1050; 1400 x 1050 ; 1280 x 1024; 1440 x 900; 1280 x 960; 1152 x 864; 1024 x 768; 832 x 624; 800 x 600 ; 640 x 480 ; 720 x 400. Seem to me the Dimension 3000 integrated graphic definitely can support the 1920 x 1080 resolution. The only problem is that Intel or Dell doesn't want to get us the updated driver to support the higher resolution. . Perhaps they want us to buy new graphic card!
Keep in mind if you have a OEM customized driver on your system this driver will not overwrite it. That is by design to protect the OEM customizations. If you are willing to take the risk and loose any graphics customizations for your system you can install the Intel driver using the have disk method. I would recommend saving a restore point before proceeding so you can revert back to previous settings if you are not satisfied with the results.
i had same problem but i finally manage it up... not me but some other guys whos createt this custom driver for win xp and im finally able to use 1920x1080 on 82865g.. just uninstal your current driver for graphycs and run setup from this file restart pc and thats it..;)
Pentium 4 HT on an Asus P4P800 Deluxe motherboard with an ATI Radeon 9500 AGP graphics card and the restricted ATI driver installed via Envy_NG. I have 3 IDE drives (two attached via the main IDE controllers and one on the VIA VT1640 controller) and an eSATA drive (on one of the onboard SATA controllers), with a mixture of software RAID1 and RAID5 and non-RAID EXT3 and NTFS partitions.
After some digging it seems that there have been a couple of clusters of Eeek! panics. Those since 2.6.21 seem to have always appeared on systems with Nvidia graphics. Looking through the numerous panics reported here (with full stacks) I see that at least one of you is using a proprietory driver, perhaps Nvidia. 2ff7e9595c
