PCIe to High Speed Serial Port Driver: What You Need to Know Before Buying

The PCI Express (RS232) Serial Adapter Card is compatible with a broad range of operating systems including Windows and Linux Kernel 2.6.11 to 4.11x, as well as MAC OS X 10.4 and above. The adapter card includes an optional half-height/low profile bracket, that lets you add a serial port to virtually any computer, regardless of the case form factor.

You can check multiple ports at the same time by opening multiple sessions, putting the loopback adapter on one port, and trying to type into each session. When you can see what you are typing, you know that the COM port is working and you can see which port number the physical serial port is. Close the window for the port that you just tested to speed up the testing of the remaining serial ports.

Serial cards derive power from the PCI or PCI Express slot on the motherboard. When you power serial devices from the serial card ports, the power provided by the slot may not be enough to power all of the devices and you should connect additional sources of power from the power supply. When you troubleshoot issues, you should connect an additional source of power.

In order to be compatible with some legacy software, some users might need to remap the assigned I/O addresses of AX99100 Parallel/Serial ports to Legacy (ISA type) I/O address (such as 378h, 3F8h, etc.). It is possible on DOS and Windows 95/98/ME operating systems but impossible on Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7/8 operating systems because the Remap I/O Address feature is only supported on DOS and Windows 95/98/ME operating systems but is not supported on Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7/8.x/10 operating systems. As the newer Windows systems maintain a much tighter control over the I/O devices and prevent any Re-Mapping I/O Address operation at device driver level. When the Re-Mapping I/O Address is not permitted, the device must use the I/O Addresses assigned by the PCIe system at Boot-Up. If the software application expects the Parallel/Serial ports to use Legacy I/O address resources, it will not be possible to make it work with the Parallel/Serial ports of PCIe based devices on Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7/8.x/10 platforms. On DOS platform, AX99100 can remap the I/O addresses of the Parallel/Serial ports to desired values by running AX99100 DOS utility. However, on Windows 95/98/ME platforms, you can only remap the I/O addresses of the Serial ports (but not Parallel port).

CH382 is a PCI-Express based dual-channel UARTs and printer port chipcontains Dual UARTs which compatible with 16C550 or 16C750, and a EPP/ECP enhanced bi-directional parallel port. The UART supports independently transmit and receive 256 bytes FIFO buffer. Supports IrDA infrared encode and decode, supports communication baud rate up to 8Mbps. It can be used for RS232 serial expansion, PCIe high-speed serial with automatic hardware speed control, serial networking, RS485 communications, parallel/ printer port expansion etc.

B): Remove the card from PC. Uninstall the existing drivers using the "MOSCHIP_PCIUninst.exe" utility (located on the installation CD in the directory; if you do not have the CD, you can download the drivers from our support pages -faq). Restart the PC. Reinstall the drivers and turn off the PC. Re-insert the card. Once rebooted, the drivers should be properly installed.

B): If problems continue to persist, automatic printer driver installation may have failed. Try removing the printer and restarting the PC. After restart, install the printer drivers again, but so that you cancel the automatic installation and add the printer manually in Control Panels / Printers with manual selection from the list of printer drivers. When installing the printer manually, select the correct LPT port. If the problem still is not resolved, try moving the card to another PCI (PCIe) slot; it may be that the card is in conflict with another device on your computer.

B): System resources, including the LPT port address with additional cards (not only AXAGON, but also of other manufacturers), are allocated by the computer BIOS already when booting. The address can be changed in MS-DOS using the driver for this system. For higher OSs (WIN98, 2000, XP, etc.) this address cannot be changed. Addresses 378 or 278 are firmly reserved for the so-called Legacy LPT ports that are integrated into motherboard chipsets. If the HW key bypasses Windows management, it will not work. You can try to consult the manufacturer of the HW key, to which address it is set up and whether the address can be changed.

USB-COM Plus mPCIe provides easy serial port expansion for any system with a full-length Mini PCI Express slot connecting to high speed RS232 or RS422/485 devices. The Mini PCIe card uses USB 2.0 signals as provided on the slot. It is fully ESD and surge protected and bus powered withstanding a wide temperature range to cope with harsh operating conditions.

The serial port allow different operating modes - easy configured via the front DIP switch - to fully support RS232, RS422 and RS485 protocols. Differential line termination for RS485 (120Ω) is controlled just by choosing the appropriate operating mode. High/Low biasing resistors are not needed, so hassle-free usage is available for the user.Com Port Drivers are available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. A configuration tool allows easy access to special Windows driver options.

USB 2.0 full speed connection allows serial data rates of up to 3Mbps for RS422/485 and 921.6kbps for RS232 mode. Every non-standard bitrate (e.g. 500kbps) can be easy set up in the range up to 960 kbps.Expanding countless computing systemsMini PCI Express slots are present in various Industrial Computers, modern SBCs, Laptops and more. If there is space for the DSub-9 connector and cabling, this product is applicable as serial port expansion.

Many newer motherboards now have PCIe slots instead of the older standard PCI slots, so if you need to add serial RS232 COM ports to your desktop computer then this PCIe serial card is the best way to do it. Using a PCIe serial card is often more reliable way of creating a serial port and provides better performance than using a USB to serial adapter. The reason is that the PCIe card is connected directly to the PCIe slot on the motherboard which gives the drivers a more direct way of communicating with the port, whereas when using a USB to serial adapter the drivers works on a higher level requiring more resources which results in higher latencies, data delays and electrical noise which eventually can result in a higher error rate.

This PCIe card adds one high-speed 9-pin serial RS232 COM port to any PCIe-equipped PC. It uses an all-in-one high quality chipset solution (MCS9922) from MosChip Technology which provides superior performance and unmatched serial PCIe data transfer rates.

The created serial port share same IRQ which saves valuable resources if other expansion cards are used. The drivers will automatically configure the next available serial PCIe COM port and IRQ address within Windows. The COM port number can be renamed with the included COM port Redirect Utility.

Thanks for your suggestions. The PCI serial port driver & PCI simple communications controller driver are missing. I receive a scrambled picture when I try to transfer video via USB converter. Please help!

Retimers and redrivers have enabled longer physical channels in servers and storage systems since Peripheral Component Interface Express (PCIe) 3.0 specification was first introduced almost 10 years ago. Now that the PCIe 4.0 specification is ramping up and the PCIe 5.0 specification is also released, how do these reach extension tools stack up in the face of new challenges in high-speed connectivity? 2ff7e9595c
